TRUCKINGRESOURCES

Resources

from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration

There are several Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) resources available to help you maintain your health and safety while on the road. We’ve identified the most relevant FMCSA resources below. Additional resources can be found on the FMCSA website.

Commercial Driver’s License Program

Drivers seeking information about the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Program medical requirements should start by visiting FMCSA’s Commercial Driver’s License Program website and the CDL Medical Overview and Medical Programs webpages. The Medical Programs page provides links to commonly requested information and documents.

Distracted Driving

The FMCSA and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) have published rules specifically prohibiting interstate truck and bus drivers and drivers who transport placardable quantities of hazardous materials from texting or using handheld mobile phones while operating their vehicles. FMCSA’s Distracted Driving page provides an overview of what you need to know to stay in compliance with the new rules. Follow the links below to learn more about the resources for distracted driving.

Proposed, New, and Changed Rules

Whether you are a trucking manager or a driver, it is important to stay up to date on any rule changes that happen in the trucking industry.

The FMCSA has proposed to make the following changes to the regulations applicable to Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs):

  • The process of which ELDs may be removed from the registered ELD list
  • Regulations regarding ELD specific technicalities like:
    • If ELDs should track driving activity more than they currently do
    • Can drivers be exempt from having an ELD
    • If ELDs should be required in pre-2000 engines
    • Clarifications on rules when there is an ELD malfunction

If you would like to read more about the proposed changes to ELDs, read a related article by Trucking Info.

The FMCSA also asks for your input. To read the proposed document and to leave a comment, visit the Federal Rulemaking Portal.
